What Are Driveway Alarms & How Do They Work?

A driveway alarm is a security device that is used to detect when vehicles and people enter a driveway. These electronic devices notify homeowners whenever there is movement on their driveway, giving them a “heads up” before the person gets to their door. Driveway alarms immediately alert you when an unexpected visitor pulls into your driveway or someone attempts to trespass on your property. Although almost any home can be equipped with a driveway alarm, they are most needed for long driveways where it’s difficult to identify the person or vehicle approaching, or small driveways with limited visibility from the home. Reliable Chimes & Security offers a wide selection of driveway alarms and other home security products in our online store!

How Do Driveway Alarms Work?

Driveway alarms typically consist of two main parts: a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter is usually battery-operated and placed at the entrance of the driveway. The receiver is often plugged into an outlet inside the home, or, if it’s wireless, it can be placed anywhere. When the transmitter detects a moving object, it will send a signal to the receiver, which will alert you with a sound, vibration, light, or a combination of the three.

Different Types Of Driveway Alarms

There are different types of sensors on driveway alarms. Infrared sensors are inexpensive and use heat to detect movement.

Magnetic probe sensors are designed to only detect metal, so you wouldn’t get false alarms from birds or small animals. These driveway alarms are easily hidden from view and are great for alerting you of cars pulling into your driveway!

A rubber hose driveway alarm uses a sensor encased in soft rubber. When a car drives over the hose, the sensor is activated and alerts you that a vehicle is in your driveway. People and animals stepping on the hose can also set off the sensor, but these types of sensors work best for detecting cars as they can be stepped over. Rubber hose sensors also need to be replaced occasionally as they wear down over time.

Photo beam sensors consist of multiple sensors, all of which must be triggered for the alarm to go off, making false alarms nearly impossible.
